Thumb Pain

Stablyx CMC arthroplasty is a thumb CMC joint reconstruction procedure used as a treatment option for thumb pain due to arthritis. This innovative new procedure has many benefits over traditional CMC arthroplasty, which tends to result in slight shortening of the thumb and an unstable joint.

The Stablyx prosthesis is designed to mirror the anatomy of the first metacarpal base such that the reconstructed joint is very stable, maintains thumb length, and requires minimal bone removal with sparing of the trapezium bone. Specially designed instruments are provided along with the Stablyx CMC arthroplasty system to facilitate removal of approximately 2 mm of affected bone from the metacarpal base.  The surface of the metacarpal is then broached to allow perfectly aligned placement of the prosthesis. The procedure does not require any tendon removal and is minimally invasive. The surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

Following surgery, your thumb will be padded and splinted to maintain proper alignment during the healing process. You may experience slight discomfort or swelling and your doctor may prescribe pain medications to relive symptoms. Keeping the hand elevated may be recommended as this encourages venous return and prevents swelling. After sufficient healing, occupational and physical therapy may be recommended to improve strength and range of motion of your thumb. Following rehabilitation, you can expect to use your thumb with little or no pain.
